Goedgedacht Rural Centre

"Our Path out of Poverty (POP) Programme has been implemented succesfully on 32 farms in the Riebeeksrivier Valley since 1998. POP is a holistic and integrated and a very long-term approach and aims to create spaces to build the human capacity of rural people so that they have the skills, capacity and means to break the cycles of poverty which have trapped them for so many generations. POP has been implemented since 1998 and focusses on Education, Health, Personal Development and Care for our Planet. It consists of antenatal classes for pregnant women, parenting training for parents, baby unit, creche facilities, pre-school, grade R, after school support programmes, youth life skills programmes, youth leadership programmes, school holiday programmes, sport development programmes, community development programmes, community savings groups, feeding programmes, elderly support programmes and monthly educational photo story book.

Our dream is to have a POP Youth Centre in every rural community in South Africa in the next few years. We have started to replicate the programme in Riebeek Kasteel and our Southern Cross POP Youth Centre in Asla in Riebeek Kasteel has started with antenatal classes for pregnant women which is generously facilitated by Bruna on Friday mornings at 11:00, an elderly support programme on on Thursday mornings in conjunction with the local clinic, a recent school holiday programme that was attended by nearly 200 children and another 300 children who were outside the doors of the centre but we only budgeted for 50 children! and an after school support programme every afternoon after school till 17:00. This centre is managed by Edlyne van der Westhuizen and we are inviting everyone to come and meet her and see the centre. I have attached a few pictures of the after school support programme which was attended last week by more than 100 children from Riebeek Kasteel. We are desperately in need of volunteers to come and assist these very keen children with reading, writing and maths skills.

We will start building our 3rd POP Youth Centre in Riebeek West soon which will provide services which will include a community gym and a trauma facility to the community of Riebeek West. This centre was made possible by the VGK Church, PPC and the local municipality. We will keep you posted on the progress hereof.
