"The Valley Empowerment Project (VEP) is an independent community project, launched in 2006 to provide trauma counselling support for survivors of crime and violence from the Riebeek Valley. Our trauma counselling service and youth outreach programmes aim to improve the welfare and safety of our Valley’s children and thereby contribute to a healthy, happy, integrated and resilient community.
The organisation is responsibly and enthusiastically run by a small Committee of volunteers who are passionate about the Riebeek Valley and all of its residents. Our overarching function is to identify critical gaps in the social fabric of our society, to formulate appropriate and sustainable responses, to raise funds and to secure donations for initiatives that reduce the inherent situational risks that our many of our youngsters experience. Our fundraising efforts ensure that our trauma counsellors receive accredited training and ongoing capacity building in comfortable, well-equipped and safe premises, so that they are able to give our community the very best of care.
In addition, we run a positive, stimulating activity programme during school holidays for high risk youth, as well as an annual Christmas party for younger children from compromised backgrounds.
The VEP also sponsors other local youth development initiatives, including the Riebeek Valley Community Theatre; a school math and reading literacy project; art competitions and creative expression opportunities for poorly resourced schools, the Wielie Walie kindergarten and the Riebeek Kasteel Community Garden Project.
The VEP does not receive any grants, public or private funding. Our project is solely reliant on our own fund-raising efforts, as well as the goodwill and generosity of concerned and aware businesses, residents and friends who support our project on an ad hoc basis."
